Ingredient Glossary
10% DHA: in tanning is an abbreviation for Dihydroxyacetone. DHA is a type of carbohydrate and is derived from plant sources such as sugar canes as well as by fermenting glycerine. Within DHA tanning products, it is the active ingredient that interacts with the amino acids in our dead skin cells to darken their appearance - giving the impression of a natural sun tan.
Acetyl Hexapeptide 8: is a peptide used in skincare products to reduce the appearance of wrinkles brought on by repeated facial expressions. When it comes to fine lines and wrinkles on the face, especially around the eyes and mouth; they usually form because of repeated facial expressions, such as smiling, frowning, or furrowing the brow in deep concentration or frustration. When people make these expressions, the face contorts based on the contraction of the muscles beneath the skin. Acetyl hexapeptide 8 is designed to temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles by intercepting messages from the brain, thereby preventing muscle contractions, similar to Botox.
Actinidia Chinensis (Kiwi fruit) Extract: Kiwifruit extract can protect the skin from the action of free radicals from UV sunlight or environmental factors and is thus an excellent anti-aging and skin lightening agent. Polysaccharides from kiwi fruit extract showed that use of the extract led to a doubling of skin cell collagen synthesis of fibroblasts. Thus the use of kiwi fruit extract may lead to a firming of sagging skin and reduction of skin wrinkle appearance.
Allantoin: helps heal wounds, skin injuries, and scars faster. It stimulates the fibroblasts (cells responsible for producing collagen) and boosts extracellular matrix synthesis. Allantoin's shortlist of soothing benefits include anti-inflammation and hydration. The versatile ingredient also acts as a skin protectant much like petroleum jelly.
Aloe Vera: is a plant with healing properties that can do wonders for your face and skin. Aloe Vera gel is a popular ingredient its medicinal and moisturizing properties. You can also use aloe Vera gel directly on your skin and face to treat sunburns, help wounds heal quicker, treat skin irritations and reduce inflammation. It contains a wealth of nutrients. Gel from the leaf of the aloe Vera plant contains vitamins, minerals, active enzymes, and amino acids.
Arginine: has been shown to have antioxidant activity. Antioxidants work by neutralizing free radicals, the unstable molecules that contribute to the formation of premature wrinkles and fine lines on the skin. Free radicals damage important cellular components, such as the cell membrane, DNA, and cellular proteins like collagen. Damaged collagen is a major factor that contributes to the appearance of aged skin. Therefore, by using topical antioxidants like arginine, the skin will be better protected from free radicals. Another function of arginine in skin care products is to increase skin hydration by acting as a humectant. A humectant is a hygroscopic substance that often has a molecular structure with several hydrophilic (water-loving) groups. This structure allows humectants to attract and retain the moisture in the air nearby via absorption, drawing the water vapor into or beneath the surface. Arginine also helps to synthesize components of the skin’s Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF), such as ceramides, cholesterol, urea, and glycosaminoglycans. Together with the naturally-occurring lipids in skin, NMF components work to keep skin’s surface intact, supple, and hydrated.
Arnica Montana: Arnica Montana flowers are great for the skin as they contain various ingredients for the skin like sesquiterpene lactones or helenalin, carbonic acid, flavonoids, coumarins and volatile oils. Helenalin along with flavonoid act on the skin that is exposed to stress and help in smoothening and renewing it. Arnica also has great antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties and heals sunburns, wounds, minor burns and superficial phlebitis.
Ascorbyl Palmitate: is a stable, lipid soluble form of vitamin C that is used for its ability to protect the skin from free radicals, stimulate collagen production, and reduce hyperpigmentation. Ascorbyl palmitate functions as an antioxidant, which means it is capable of protecting the skin from free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Free radicals are generated from external factors such as UV light, smoking, and pollution. Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals by a process of electron transfer and/or donation. This is important because the harmful effects of free radicals occur as direct chemical alterations of the cellular DNA, the cell membrane, and the cellular proteins, including collagen. When collagen within the skin is damaged, signs of premature aging can appear, such as wrinkles, lines, and sagging skin. Therefore, the ability of ascorbyl palmitate to protect collagen makes it an ideal ingredient to include in anti-aging skincare products. Ascorbyl palmitate is also used as a skin-lightening agent to treat hyperpigmentation, the appearance of dark spots on the skin. It interacts with copper ions at tyrosinase-active sites and inhibits the action of the enzyme tyrosinase, the main enzyme responsible for the conversion of tyrosine into melanin, thereby decreasing melanin formation. By decreasing the synthesis of melanin, the appearance of dark spots is reduced. Ascorbyl palmitate also improves the elasticity of the skin and reduces wrinkles by stimulating collagen synthesis. Vitamin C is the most abundant antioxidant in human skin. After oral intake of vitamin C, however, the absorption in the gut is limited by an active transport mechanism. This means that no matter how much vitamin C you ingest only a finite amount can be absorbed. Further, the bioavailability of vitamin C in the skin is inadequate when it is administered orally. Therefore, we rely entirely on external supplementation, such as topical application in the case of cosmetics.
Avocado: The nutrients – the healthy monounsaturated fats like oleic and linoleic acids, A, B, C and E vitamins, and minerals like potassium, phosphorus, and calcium – that contribute to the myriad health benefits of avocado are the ones that make it good for the skin as well.

This means that its unique chemical makeup helps it penetrate more deeply into the skin, delivering other nutrients, minerals, antioxidants, and hydrating products further into the skin. It can help soothe skin irritation and inflammation, and has analgesic (pain relieving) properties. It’s believed that this ingredient can stimulate the skin’s natural healing processes, including collagen turnover. While alpha bisabolol alone is not enough to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, it’s often found alongside other skin protectant ingredients in sunscreens and “after-sun” products, because it helps protect against sun damage and stimulates healing after UV exposure
Butyrospermum Parkin Butter (Shea butter): The particularly high content of tocopherols and antioxidant ingredients are significant for its effect as a healing aid. Shea butter regulates the moisture balance of the skin naturally and moisturises the skin, soothing and smoothing. The lipid barrier of the cornea is strengthened, making shea butter ideal for the care of dry, atopic and damaged skin. It is extremely well tolerated and relaxes irritated and stressed skin.

In addition to firming and reducing lines, ginseng helps de-puff the area around your eyes and can help minimize dark circles.
Glycolic Acid: Main function is to exfoliate the skin and break down dead skin cells. For this reason, it can be useful in treating acne, which occurs as a result of pores becoming clogged. Since the molecule is so small, it can penetrate the top layer of your skin (the epidermis) to act on the cells below – reducing the appearance of scarring and signs of premature ageing, including fine lines and wrinkles. It also has antioxidant properties and can help reduce pigmentation. ‘Glycolic acid, like other AHAs, also helps to reduce the pH of the skin surface, which can have beneficial effects on the skin microbiome – optimising the good bacterial flora on the skin surface. Of the AHAs, glycolic is the simplest in structure and the smallest, it has the lowest molecular weight, which means that it can easily permeate the skin. Glycolic acid exfoliates the outermost dead layer of the dermis and increases luminosity by improving the reflection of light on the skin.
Grape Seed Oil: Largely known for its anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties, grapeseed oil also contains high amounts of omega fatty acids and vitamin E. L-ascorbic acid’s full name may look a little daunting, but it just refers to a specific structure of vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is the name of vitamin C in the body and the “ L” in L-ascorbic acid refers to the way the molecule rotates to light. Helps to maintain skin barrier integrity, fights pigmentation, may be involved in inflammation processes in the skin, is involved in collagen production, and protects against sun damage. L-ascorbic acid is the most abundant antioxidant in the body, but humans cannot produce it on their own unlike other mammals. Instead, we extract vitamin C through our diet or supplementation. Vitamin C is involved in many processes within our bodies, so the vitamin C we absorb gets distributed to all cells. However, the skin is often the last organ to receive vitamin C and does not receive it at the concentrations required to affect the skin in any significant way.
Lactic Acid: Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid used to exfoliate the skin, lighten dark spots, and improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Lactic acid exfoliates the skin.
